John Hersey (1914 - 1993) was famous for using fiction to help readers reach a greater understanding of historical events. His novel, A Bell for Adano, looks at the impact of American troops occupying an Italian village during World War II. Hersey won a Pulitzer Prize in 1945 for A Bell for Adano and it was made into a motion picture starring Gene Tierney. Hersey died at his home in Key West, Florida in 1993.
