Lynne Barrett has a B.A. from Mount Holyoke and an M.F.A. from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Barrett teaches creative writing at Florida International University in North Miami. She was the founding editor of Gulf Stream Magazine. Barrett is currently the founder and editor of the Florida Book Review website.

Barrett won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1991 for her short story Elvis Lives. Her short story Beauty won the Best Short Story Award at the Moondance Film Festival in 2001. Her short story "The Noir Boudoir" was published in the anthology Miami Noir edited by Les Standiford. Other short stories appear in the anthologies Delta Blues, A Hell of a Woman, A Dixie Christmas, and Simply the Best Mysteries, among others. "Little Red Returns" is featured in the chapter on the Contemporary Tale in the writing textbook One Year to a Writing Life. Barrett's third book, Magpies, was awarded the 2011 Gold Medal for General Fiction in the Florida Book Awards.

Of particular Florida interest: Barrett edited Tigertail, A South Florida Print Annual: Florida Flash, which came out Fall 2011 and has flash fiction, flash nonfiction, and prose poetry. Borrowing her concept of 305 words as the limit, WLRN ran a contest Fall 2011 to accompany the collection's publication.
