Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1896-1953) was born in 1896 in Washington, D.C. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received a degree in English in 1918. Her best known work, the Yearling, won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1939 and was later made into a movie. Rawlings resided in Cross Creek Florida near Hawthorne and Crescent Beach near St. Augustine. Rawlings died in 1953 in St. Augustine.
