Steve Alten (1959-) grew up in Philadelphia. Alten played basketball while in High School and College. He intended to coach basketball as a career and has a master's in sports medicine from the University of Delaware, and a doctorate in sports administration from Temple University. After College, Alten tried a business venture with a friend that failed. During this time, he moved to Florida and decided to work on a novel that he had been thinking about for some time.
