Thomas McGuane was born in Michigan and spent time on a ranch in Montana. His time in Montana colored the tone and subject of his writing. He also spent time in Florida, which would become part of some his fiction. McGuane was educated at Michigan State University, Yale and received a fellowship at Stanford, where he wrote his first novel. McGuane wrote a novel (The Sporting Club) that took his protaganist from Michigan, Montana, and the Florida Keys. McGuane had ties to Jimmy Buffett and even married Buffet's sister.
